Clothes: The Canvas of Madame Hall's Expression
Share
Clothes…for some people, they're just mere clothes. Something they wear to preserve their sense of propriety. However, for the other half, they serve a purpose that goes beyond just a necessity. For those selected ones, the ones who consider clothes as their expression, the way they dress tells a story. Of their mood, what's going on in their lives, their lifestyle, and most importantly, their sense of self. It becomes a part of their personality, they fashion personal style. And oh, do they abide by it, and how?!
In those selected few, sometimes, there's one who gets excited about the little things that adorn the clothes. Every stitch fascinates them, the embroidery makes them wonder how many hours of work was put into it, where it has been sourced from, and was it ethical? These are the factors that hold significant value in their selection process of clothing.
For them, clothes are their medium of expression. They express themselves through the clothes they design. Yes. Design. They design and create their version of beautiful art to wear, clothes that complement individual styles.
Amongst those selected few, the rare ones as we call them, Madame (Lisa) Hall is truly one.
Childhood and Early Passion for Clothing
From as far back as she remembers, Lisa has always been obsessed with clothes. The pretty ones, as little Lisa used to refer to them. Little did she know she'd grow up and design pieces, dresses, tunics, jackets, skirts, for women, which would find their appreciators and collectors from all over the world! Madame Hall…it belongs to all those who are passionate about unique art to wear, dresses that are gorgeous in their wake, and have dramatic, expressive silhouettes!
If someone asks how Lisa Hall became Madame Hall, what's the story behind relocating to Bhuj, creating unique handmade women's clothes instead of the wonderful, glamorous life she had in Australia…the answer is simple. Love. Yes. Love. Her love for pretty clothes, and turning them into something exceptional that asks for an audience as niche as her design is!
The love for clothes, and her designs, profoundly fuelled by early learnings, the influence of dynamic mentors, empowered women, and her eye for detail!
In the 1970s, Adelaide, South Australia had a thriving arts community, and Lisa found herself naturally gravitating towards the bohemian world, which later became her signature style, creating boho women's clothing from her atelier in Kutch, Bhuj, India, paired with handcrafted textiles and intricate mirror work!
Luckily, she was one who knew exactly what she wanted to do when she left school, and trained as a professional pattern maker, specialising in design & garment construction. Here, Lisa learnt how to apply practical knowledge by channeling her creative intuition. Understanding the psychological support clothing decisions give the wearer is an absolutely fascinating topic, and one Lisa has always been deeply curious about!
The Alice in Wonderland Moment in Bhuj
Lisa's first ever visit to Bhuj turned out to be an experience that deeply influenced the way she looked at fashion! She often describes that gleeful, awe-filled experience by comparing it to Alice in Wonderland! The moment she stepped off the plane, she saw people wearing clothes completely different to what she was accustomed to. 15 years ago, the internet in rural India was a scarce resource. Social media was in its infancy and few, including her, had much exposure to cultural differences. Kutch, being a remote area inhabited largely by a diverse population of tribal communities, was devoid of fashion trends. Bhuj felt very authentic, and completely untouched by outside influences. Popular western culture was nowhere to be seen. This was an extraordinary experience for Lisa, discovering a world where people were not aspirational, abided by their own cultural traditions and found creativity within the craft rich heritage of their community.
Her first impressions of Kutch…this Alice in Wonderland moment, though possibly naive and simplistic, left her heady with excitement, in the heartfelt belief she'd just experienced the most magical days of her life!
The designer in her soon kicked in, and she began exploring Kutch with a keen eye and an open mind. Wherever she went, inspiration found her, in the forms of homemade bags at a bus stop, the proportions of tribal dress, or quirky colour combinations. The genuine curiosity and mutual respect for dedicated craft surpassed the language barriers, and gave her deep insight into the artisans' work. These initial conversations welcomed her into the artisans' lives with love and affection. This is one of the biggest inspirations to design artisan clothing for women that Madame Hall is built on, and stands proudly at.
Design Philosophy Woven Through
When Lisa works with artisan made textiles, her aim is to honour the talent, the hours invested, and the skill that's gone into making each piece. At Madame Hall's atelier, while the pieces are being designed and turned into unique handmade women's clothes, each and every piece gets evaluated, and only the ones that are truly special, the ones that command attention, make the cut!
In some cases, she'll find wonderful embroidery, and wait literally years for the perfect fabric to team it with. Earlier this year, a fabulous embroidery bodice by the Madari community came along, something extremely special, worthy of a unique fabric for a fantastic dress. Then she remembered, 5 years earlier she'd bought a vintage Madari Bandhani skirt. It was unusual because it was also covered with hand stitched colourful sequins. The embroidery and skirt fabric were a match made in heaven! In her excitement to complete the garment, she even hand sewed a few more sequins herself for the perfect look. That dress, a strictly one of a kind piece, was bought by a Madame Hall collector in Switzerland who recognised its value immediately.
For new designs, the artisans are given full creative freedom to make something that's uniquely theirs, which brings them creative satisfaction, and brings Lisa the most gorgeous, handmade, utterly artisan made embroideries. Ami, Vilayat, and her niece Meruna are highly skilled at needlework. They contribute to Madame Hall designs on a regular basis. They are provided with quality materials like fabric and embroidery threads, and guided with ideas, but given the freedom to create the finished details and use of colour. This way, they stay engaged, enthusiastic and creatively satisfied with their work. At Madame Hall, the belief is that people who enjoy their work add that extra something, an aura that makes a garment feel special to wear. It's that positive energy that differentiates Madame Hall designs, artisan clothing for women, from factory made clothing.
Lisa's Quest for Timeless Designs
To make boho women's clothing with an artisanal touch and Indian accents, Lisa's imagination works 24x7, searching for a new technique, an unusual design element, and something distinctive that she'd want on her own clothes.
And that's exactly what makes Madame Hall's pieces resonate with clients and feel personal. The designs are created only when Lisa thinks she'd wear it herself. If she wouldn't wear it, you won't find it in Madame Hall’s atelier ! Practical considerations are important to her, and that's why almost all of the Madame Hall collection is cotton, because it's perfect for the Indian climate. She personally loves pockets, and so all designs feature pockets. Comfortable clothes are important to her, and a relaxed fit with skin friendly design elements make Madame Hall clothes enjoyable to wear.
Colour and pattern contrasts excite her, and her mornings are usually spent with her wonderful colleague and co-designer Dipu, discussing their fabric collection and new design possibilities.
For Lisa, fully focusing on any design project gives her immense satisfaction, it's actually like therapy! The love for the creative challenge in finding design opportunities, often utilising leftover materials for special features like appliqué and patchwork details. Zero waste motivates her to dream up designs where not a single scrap gets wasted, like her ever popular Upcycled Shaggy Bags, which use even the smallest embroidery and fabric fragments. Each bag is unique, with carefully placed embroidery for maximum impact.
And lastly, but most importantly, Lisa is inspired by conversations with her customers. Getting feedback from fans and followers, listening to their ideas, or hearing about something they bought years ago and still enjoy is a great reminder of successful designs she may have forgotten about. Direct communication between Lisa and her customers has not only rewarded her with many good friends, but also guides her when choosing materials and developing new styles. Personal relationships, whether with artisans, colleagues, or customers, have proved beyond doubt that the individual care and attention given to each and every thing they make is what gives Madame Hall clothing that special something we all yearn for.
